WHY NZBJJF RULES COURSE?
1. CERTIFICATION
This certificate is a requirement for obtaining an NZBJJF black belt certification.
2. CRITERIA
The participant must score at least 70% on the exam to be approved on the Rules Course and to obtain the Certificate of Achievement. Participants have one attempt to take the final exam.

NZBJJF Competition Rules – Quick Guide
Based on the IBJJF Rulebook
1. What to Wear (Uniform Rules):
• GI Divisions: Clean, properly fitted gi (white, blue, or black). Must be IBJJF approved.
• NO-GI Divisions: Rashguard (at least 10% of your rank color), black shorts with no pockets or metal.
• Belts: Correct belt rank, tied properly.

2. How Matches Are Won:
• Submission: Opponent taps (physically or verbally).
• Points: Score more by achieving positions like takedown, guard pass, mount, or back control.
• Advantages: Near submissions or almost-completed positions.
• Referee Decision: If tied on points and advantages.

3. Points Breakdown:
• Takedown: 2 points
• Guard Pass: 3 points
• Mount or Back Control: 4 points
• Sweep or Knee on Belly: 2 points

4. What’s Not Allowed (Common Fouls):
• Slamming to escape submissions
• Twisting knee locks (for kids and lower belts)
• Hands or fingers inside sleeves or pant legs
• Leaving the mat intentionally
Penalties can result in points given to your opponent, or disqualification.

5. Weigh-In Rules:
• You weigh in right before your match, in full uniform (gi or no-gi gear).
• You must be on weight — there’s no second chance.
• Always check your division’s weight limit in advance.

6. Parents & Coaches – Please Note:
• Only registered coaches may be in the coaching area.
• Show respect to referees and staff — poor behavior can lead to removal or penalties for the athlete.
• Help your athlete stay calm, focused, and hydrated.
