GRADUATION
The New Zealand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (NZBJJF) follows the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) Graduation System, which serves to unify and standardize the practice, teaching, and competition of modern Jiu-Jitsu.
Aligned with the spirit of the Jiu-Jitsu Book of Rules (published January 2012), the IBJJF Graduation Guidelines provide a clear framework for how athletes can progress through each belt level, from White to Red. This system ensures consistency and fairness across the board, supporting both instructors and students in their journey of technical development and achievement.
Key Features of the IBJJF Graduation System:
-
Clear Belt Progression: Athletes advance through belts based on their skill, commitment, and time spent training.
-
Incorporation of Stripes: For certain belts, stripes are added to track progression and mark key milestones in a student’s journey.
-
Standardized for All: The system is universally recognized, ensuring that progression is consistent no matter where you train, giving students a clear understanding of their advancement.

Kids Graduation System:
For younger practitioners, the IBJJF has specific guidelines that involve three types of graduation systems based on degrees and stripes. This ensures that children progress at a pace suited to their age and development, while also maintaining the integrity of the IBJJF system.
We encourage all our academies and students to follow these guidelines to ensure a consistent, fair, and transparent approach to BJJ progression.
